#262: A Taste of Kopi Luwak

Photo from http://catpoopcoffeeinc.com

Remember the bunny in the movie Hop that poops jelly beans? The Luwak laughs at that bunny. You see, the Luwak (that adorable creature above) poops something much more delicious, and much more expensive than jelly beans: Kopi Luwak coffee beans. How expensive? One cup of Kopi Luwak at Funnel Mill in Santa Monica costs $90!

The Luwak lives in the trees of Sumatra and loves to eat ripe coffee cherries, beans and all. When the beans are in the Luwak's stomach, they get fermented. The Luwak poops, the beans are collected, cleaned, roasted, and ground into the most expensive coffee on the planet.

*UPDATE* I was just informed by a reader, Ben, that the Kopi Luwak business has gotten so lucrative that nowadays Kopi Luwak is made from caged Luwaks who are treated cruelly! :( I no longer recommend trying Kopi Luwak! Thanks Ben for opening my eyes to this travesty. Check out the link he provides below in the comment section to learn more.

  1. Seriously, don't try this.

"Today, kopi luwak mainly comes from caged wild luwaks, often kept in appalling conditions... [They] are caught by poachers, caged and force-fed coffee cherries... The naturally shy and solitary nocturnal creatures suffer greatly from the stress of being caged in proximity to other luwaks, and the unnatural emphasis on coffee cherries in their diet causes other health problems too; they fight among themselves, gnaw off their own legs, start passing blood in their scats, and frequently die."

  3. I don't know why i love this coffee but the fact is i just love to drink it and it makes me so fresh after a heavy workload. It is really healthy drink. Good news for the coffee and tea drinkers among us. A new study suggests that the benefits of coffee and tea might include a lower chance of developing the most common type of malignant brain tumors.
